Oncology Rego Park
Edward Zhou, MD, is an attending physician in hematology/oncology at Northwell Health at Rego Park, and at the R.J. Zuckerberg Cancer Center in New Hyde Park. He brings not only deep expertise but also empathy to his practice, particularly for individuals navigating benign blood conditions, with a special focus on sickle cell disease.Dr. Zhou's commitment to medicine began early. Witnessing a family member's medical emergency during high school ignited a passion within him, prompting him to volunteer at a local hospital. He received his undergraduate degree at Hofstra University and attended medical school at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He also completed his residency and fellowship at Zucker School of Medicine. Dr. Zhou was drawn to the intricacies of non-cancerous hematology because of the unique challenges faced by patients with conditions like sickle cell disease. Staying with Northwell was a natural fit, recognizing its resources and commitment to establishing a dedicated center for adults living with this lifelong condition. There is a tremendous need for a specialized center like this, one helmed by a hematologist with an in-depth understanding of the nuanced needs of this patient population, Dr. Zhou says. Beyond direct patient care, Dr. Zhou is a passionate advocate, dedicated to educating fellows, fellow physicians, and emergency room staff about the realities of living with sickle cell disease. He actively champions initiatives to reduce excessive wait times and improve the quality of care in the emergency department (ED) when adult patients are experiencing a pain crisis. Many individuals with sickle cell disease regrettably know what it's like to arrive at the ED in agonizing pain, only to be met with misunderstanding or skepticism, he says. My primary purpose is to help people effectively manage their pain and other aspects of living with sickle cell disease. It's rewarding to be a trusted resource, someone patients can speak with honestly, and who truly understands their concerns.
